Friday 9:00am-3:00pm: Instructor Certification Training

Instructor's looking to recertify can join in on this one day training session and get brushed up just in time for the weekend.

Friday night there is a guest speaker from the Marine Conservation reserve; Greg Stroud.

Greg Stroud will be presenting on the new Lake Superior Marine Conservation Area (MCA).  Parks Canada as identified this area as a special place in Canada. It is one of only three Marine Conservation Areas in the country identified to date.  He will share some of the reasons why this area is so special and what it will mean for the people who call this place home as well as for visitors who choose this area for recreation.  Since Rossport is nestled in the heart of the MCA, this is a great opportunity to find out what has been done to date and what some of the plans are for the future of the Marine Conservation Area.

Greg Stroud

Greg Stroud grew up on the east coast of Newfoundland nestled near Terra Nova National Park.  His backyard included endless islands, bays and wilderness where he spent most of his time exploring.  After graduating with a biology degree from Memorial University of Newfoundland he began his career working for the national park as a naturalist.  While in Terra Nova, he work coordinating science research on birds, plants and lichens as well as managing the visitor experience and education programs.  After twenty years in Terra Nova, he moved to Northern Ontario to continue his career with Parks Canada at Pukakswa National Park where he worked for two years before moving to PEI for a year.  Now he is back in the north as the new Visitor Experience Manager for the Lake Superior Marine Conservation Area working out of Nipigon.  When not working, you will find him exploring in his kayak(s), chasing birds or photographing plants.

Next up: PADDLING THE NORTH BRITTANY COAST OF FRANCE, presentation by Gail Green of Living Adventures, Bayfield, Wisconsin.

Brittany shares a Celtic history with the coastal territories of northern neighbors Ireland, north brittany coastWales, Normandy, and England. The northern coast of Brittany is renowned for the spectacular ruggedness and color of the pink granite that predominates the shorelines. Tranquil sand beaches are bookmarked by heaving cliffs and astounding natural stone sculptures. Of note in this area is the remarkable tidal range; up to 40 feet in spring tides. This is a mecca for sea kayakers and hikers; hiking paths run the complete circumference of the Brittany coast. Paddling rock gardens, island hopping, visiting lighthouses, coastal exploration and of great course wine and cheese lunches (!) are features of this beautiful presentation.

Rocking Rodeo

We would love to be able to describe exactly what this event is but we aren't even sure how it will manifest itself.  It' s the water version of the ”wacky races.” It provides all levels of kayakers the chance to get in the water, act a little bit crazy and have some fun. Join us as either a participant or an observer.

am Yoga for Paddlers

What do Sage or Half Lord of the Fishes, tree pose and Trikonasana have in common? They’re all great for flexing the main muscles requiring flexibility while paddling. This pre-breakfast session will prepare your body and mind for a productive flexible day. For comfort, bring a towel or something soft to kneel on.
